Alleging that the KRBL industrial unit at Bhasaur has polluted their groundwater, farmers from Babbanpur and Bhasaur, under the banner of the BKU Ugrahan, protested in front of the Dhuri SDM office on Monday. They said they would intensify their stir if authorities failed to act.

“Farmers of Babbanpur and Bhasaur met the Dhuri SDM and other authorities to complain against the KRBL unit as it has been causing pollution of the groundwater. However, their requests have fallen on deaf ears and there has been no action. We will intensify our agitation if the authorities fail to address our problem,” said Manjit Singh Jahangir, Dhuri block press secretary of BKU Ugrahan.

Protesters said the water from their tubewells was stinking and the colour, too, had changed.

“The number of patients suffering from cancer and other diseases has been increasing. However, the authorities are not paying any heed,” said Lakhwinder Singh, a youth from Babbanpur village.

The KRBL management has denied the allegations and said they are following all norms and have all evidence to prove it.

Dhuri SDM Rohela said he along with officers of the PPCB visited Babbanpur village three days ago and took water samples. “We will act as per the test reports,” he said.
