Bathinda, July 4

The district police have arrested an SHO and a Sub-Inspector (SI)for allegedly taking bribe and letting off an accused in a drug peddling case. The accused cops, SHO Bikker Singh and munshi Jaspal Sharma, were posted at Rampura city police station. They have been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The police said the cops had rounded up Kuldeep Singh of Rampura city on the charges of drug peddling on July 1 and then let him off after allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000.

SSP Naveen Singla said: “The accused cops have been sent to one-day police remand. We will try to establish if there were other links to the case and if they were involved in such activities earlier also.”

Sources say Kuldeep is the son of a local Congress leader. The opposition SAD has come out against the ruling party over the issue. Former minister Sikander Singh Maluka claimed that the Congress leader was known to have links with a Cabinet minister.

MF Farooqui, IG, Bathinda, said they had given directions to the police personnel to adopt a tough stance against drug peddling.

3 held with 3-kg heroin

Amritsar: The police arrested three persons with 3 kg of heroin. Those arrested are Dhir Singh of Raniya village, Harjinder Singh of Veroke village and Gagandeep Singh of the Preet Nagar area.  The police recovered three packets. They claimed that Dhir Singh came in contact with Faizal of Daud Bhaini village in Pakistan through a social networking site. They became friends as both were fond of “pigeon racing”. Faizal gradually lured Dhir Singh into drug smuggling. Dhir involved Harjinder Singh and his friend Gagandeep Singh in the illegal trade for easy money. TNS
