The counter-intelligence wing of the police has busted an inter-state drug smuggling racket and seized 2.5 quintals of poppy husk that was being transported in a Mahindra Jumbo truck, generally used to supply milk, in Satnampura locality here.
This was stated by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Counter-Intelligence, Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh here today. He said a drug smuggler, identified as Karam Singh of Fatehgarh Sahib, had been arrested and the truck impounded.
He said the wing had got a tip-off that a drug consignment was being supplied by Madhya Pradesh-based smugglers.
Khakh said the police laid a naka on the Phagwara-Nakodar road and intercepted the Mahindra Jumbo. “During checking, 12 bags of poppy husk were found concealed in the vehicle,” he added.
A case was registered at Satnampura police station under Sections 15, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act.
The AIG said Karam Singh was arrested with 400-kg poppy husk in 2016 by the Amloh police. He was out on bail in that case.
