Muktsar, December 11
Despite getting the tag of the dirtiest city in the state in Swachh Survekshan-2017, the Muktsar Municipal Council doesn’t have a permanent executive officer (EO). Three EOs have been transferred in the past two months and the work is getting affected.
Besides, the post of sanitary inspector is also lying vacant. In such a situation, how can one even think of getting better civic amenities in this historic town.
Sources in the Municipal Council and local residents said local-level politics was responsible behind this indifferent treatment.
Rajnish Girdhar, who was posted here as executive officer on November 14, was transferred on November 30. Earlier too, he was transferred from the same post on October 13. Before him, Ravi Jindal, executive officer from Mansa, was transferred here and later sent to some neighbouring town.
Girdhar said, “I can’t comment about the reason behind my transfer. I am a government employee and transfer is part of my job. Now, I am holding the charge of Jalalabad and Fazilka towns.”
The absence of EO adversely affects the sanitation and development works. Besides, the staff hasn’t received their salaries for November. Heaps of garbage is seen lying in every nook and corner of the city.
Now, the annual Maghi Mela is also approaching next month, when a large number of people come here to take a dip in holy pond at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib here. However, the two top MC posts are lying vacant.
Akali leader Harpal Singh Bedi, president of the Muktsar MC, has, however, repeatedly alleged that the transfers were being done at the behest of some local Congress leaders and the work was suffering.
Local residents have also lodged protests many a time, demanding better civic amenities.
