Out of the 18 MPs with Punjab roots, who have won the general elections in Canada, five hail from Hoshiarpur.
Harjit Singh Sajjan hails from Bambeli village. Elected MP in 2015, he served Canada as the Defence Minister. Villagers gathered at his house and marked his success by dancing to dhol beats. Laddoos were distributed. Harjeet’s cousin Jasvir Singh said he had illuminated the name of the village. After becoming Defence Minister, Sajjan had come to the village and stayed for a night.
Anju Dhillon, who has won from Lachine-LaSalle, Quebec, is the daughter of Hardeep Singh Dhillon, a resident of Darapur Dharamkot village in Kandi area. Hardeep’s family had migrated to Canada in 1978.
Ruby Sahota, who won the Brampton North seat, has her roots in Mohalla Vijay Nagar. She is the daughter-in-law of the Sahota family, which hailed from Motiyan village and later shifted to Vijay Nagar. Gurbax Singh Sahota, grandfather of Ruby’s husband Harbans Singh, migrated to Canada in 1970. The family is still in touch with Hoshiarpur. She visited her native home a few years ago.
Navdeep Bains, who triumphed from the Mississauga Maltan seat of Ontario, finds his lineage in Lehli Kalan village. Later, his family settled in Mahilpur. Bains is married to Brahamjot of Nandachaur village in Hoshiarpur.
Sukh Dhaliwal, Surrey Newton MP, hails from Ludhiana, but was brought up in Hoshiarpur and completed his education here.
