Former MC leader of opposition Jagdish Raja was on Thursday elected as the sixth mayor of Jalandhar. 

The 63-year-old veteran leader had earlier served four tenures as Congress councillor. This is his fifth tenure as a councillor from Ward No 48.

Also, four-time councillor Surinder Kaur was elected as senior deputy mayor and Congress MLA Sushil Rinku’s close aide Harsimran Bunty was elected as deputy mayor. 

Raja has a history of holding important positions in the MCJ. His wife Anita also served as three-time councillor and also a senior deputy mayor from 2002 to 2007.
