As many as 689 women recruits from across the state were inducted as constables in the Punjab Police during a passing-out parade held at the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) ground on Tuesday.

Parents who had come to watch their daughters march in uniform were full of pride. Kashmir Singh, a scrap dealer and father of a recruit, said, “It’s a moment of great honour for my family as all our struggles and my daughter’s hard work have borne fruit today.”

A resident of Ghuman village in Gurdaspur, Kashmir Singh said his daughter had gone through many ups and downs. “Before her selection for the Punjab Police, she had also appeared for defence examination but couldn’t succeed. By God’s grace, she will don the police uniform now.”

Harmanpreet Kaur from Amritsar was selected as the leading commanding recruit during the passing out parade. From an Army background, she said she was the only woman in her family who had been selected for the Punjab Police. After leading the parade, she added it was indeed a matter of huge responsibility that her instructing officers had picked her to command all recruits before senior Punjab Police officials.

The award for the best all-rounder recruit was given to Manjit Kaur. “The vigorous 10-month training has made us strong enough to fight all odds. It has increased my confidence level a lot and my foremost duty is to work for the welfare of public,” said Manjit, who got her first posting in Muktsar. Rimpi was adjudged first in shooting.

DGP (law and order) Hardeep Singh Dhillon who was present as the guest of honour congratulated the newly commissioned constables and asked them to be duly bound to their duties. He also advised them to invest some proportion of their salaries into equity funds or other government schemes for better financial management.

ADGP Kuldeep Singh; Director, PPA, Phillaur, Anita Punj; IGPs Tajinder Pal Singh, Naunihal Singh and Jaskaran Singh; Jalandhar Police Commissioner PK Sinha; DIG Dr SK Kalia and commandants from various battalions were present on the occasion.
