Police stations in any part of the state are usually shabby and fair poorly in terms of maintenance and upkeep, but the Fatehgarh Sahib police have set a new example. The district introduced the first-ever cleanliness competition for police stations and posts.

As a result, 16 buildings, comprising nine police stations and seven posts, adorn a new look, besides improved landscape with flower pots and lawns.

SSP Amneet Kondal told The Tribune that she started the competition in sync with Diwali festival to instil a sense of cleanliness among the staff. “The buildings were dirty, with wild growth covering the case property vehicles and even rooftops. The police station staff was told to carry out special cleanliness mission and paint the building fresh,” she said.

Of the 16 buildings, the Badali Ala police station led by SHO Mohinder Singh on the Sirhind-Chandigarh road won the overall cleanliness trophy. Besides fresh paint and cleanliness, the police station was adjudged the best in providing corporate offices kind of decoration and well-laid out lawn and flower pots. The SSP said clean buildings would surely go a long way on providing a public-friendly environment to the police stations.

Sources said the staff of different police stations pooled money to pay for the expenses apart from utilising the official maintenance fund for the renovation of buildings.
