A year later, no trace of missing GNDU teacher

It has almost been a year since Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) lecturer Sukhpreet Kaur Brar went missing under mysterious circumstances. The police, failing to trace her so far, have now initiated the process of declaring her dead.

The investigation in the case has already reached a dead end. Assistant Prof Sukhpreet Kaur Brar had gone missing on September 11 last year. She had left a note in her room on the university campus, stating she was going to meet Jazziinder Singh, alias Garry Virk, who owed her money. 

She also had expressed apprehensions that she would be harmed. The incident came to light four days later when her father approached the GNDU authorities after he received a ransom call allegedly from Virk for her release.

Later, Virk committed suicide at a hotel in Maharashtra. The police found his car abandoned near the hotel. The forensic examination of the car had confirmed the presence of blood stains, which turned out to be of Virk. All efforts to trace her or her body did not yield any result.

The police also asked the police stations, under whose jurisdiction the Amritsar-Chandigarh route falls, to inform if they find any woman’s body during that period. Virk, the “kidnapper” apparently had taken this route after allegedly kidnapping her.

However, the local police did not receive any information in this regard while the forensic reports of the car, used in the crime, also did not yield any significant result helpful in tracing the lecturer.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Lakhbir Singh said there was no progress in the case so far.

He added that a person was presumed dead if he/she had been missing for a certain period where the circumstances surrounding his/her disappearance overwhelmingly support the belief that the person is dead. Earlier, the period was seven year, but it has been reduced to a year.
