Amritsar, February 18

Punjab Advocate General Atul Nanda has mooted a comprehensive insurance cover for lawyers from the Advocates Welfare Fund, which is currently being used for granting compensation to the legal fraternity.

Addressing the inaugural function of the two-day workshop on Professional Development Programme for Lawyers, organised by the Bar Council of India, Nanda called for a break from the conventional use of the funds in order to provide wider assistance to lawyers.

In his keynote address, the senior advocate also favoured the establishment of an academy for improving the skills of lawyers. He was of the view that such an academy should be participative in nature rather than being a state product.

Endorsing Nanda’s view, Justice Mahesh Grover of the Punjab and Haryana High Court suggested that until such an initiative was in place, the Chandigarh Judicial Academy could be used for the purpose. Justice Anil Ksheterpal underlined the importance of senior advocates mentoring and training juniors.

Manan Kumar Mishra, senior advocate and chairman of the Bar Council of India, delivered the presidential address.
