Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today mourned the death of one of its most distinguished scientists, Dr Dilbagh Singh Athwal, known as the “Father of the Wheat Revolution”.

Addressing a condolence meeting, Vice-Chancellor Dr BS Dhillon said Dr Athwal’s outstanding contribution in the field of agriculture was unsurpassable.

“He played a pivotal role in initiating the Green Revolution in the country. He was a geneticist, plant breeder and agricultural scientist of international repute,” Dr Dhillon said.

Dr Athwal had served as the founder head of the Department of Plant Breeding, PAU. The university, which has a guest house named after him, remained closed for half a day today as a mark of respect for the deceased.

Dr GS Kalkat, an agricultural scientist, said: “Dr Athwal’s demise is a big loss to the scientific community.”
