Air India will start the Amritsar-Delhi-Toronto flight, which will fly three times in a week, from September 27, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said today.

“I am glad I was able to help in fulfilling this long pending demand of citizens of Guru Nagri and devotees who travel from North America to pay obeisance at Sri Harmandar Sahib, Durgiana Mandir and other holy places,” he added.

Thanking Puri for initiating the flight, MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla said from Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, numerous flights were being operated via Delhi for various destinations, whereas the virtual gain for Punjabis would have been if Air India’s flight schedule was Delhi-Amritsar-Toronto.

“Though, the Amritsar-Delhi-Toronto flight is a positive signal, I would like to remind Puri that Punjabi NRIs demanded a direct flight from Amritsar to various destinations like Toronto, Birmingham, London and Brisbane, not through Delhi. If it is not possible at present juncture, then the other flights for various countries too should be routed through Amritsar. This will strengthen the economic condition of the Amritsar airport,” he added.

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Shwait Malik said Puri had fulfilled the long-pending demand of Punjabi NRIs who were eager to visit Amritsar to pay obeisance at Golden Temple and other holy places.
