Army team from Bathinda scales Tungnath peak

Chandigarh, August 14

A team of 21 mountaineers from the Army’s Black Charger Brigade and 5 Armoured Regiment has successfully scaled the famous Tungnath peak that lies at an altitude of 12,073 feet. The aim of the expedition was to promote preservation of nature and spread awareness about eco-tourism.

The team, led by Major Mohit Markale, comprised of three officers, three junior commissioned officers and 15 other ranks. It was flagged off from Bathinda Cantonment on July 23 by Brig Surya Bhanu Rai, Commander Black Charger Brigade, and it returned this week.

Tungnath is one of the highest temples devoted to Lord Shiva and is the highest among the five ‘Panch Kedar’ temples that are located in the mountain range of Tungnath range along the Mandakini and Alaknanda valleys. The temple is believed to be 5,000 years’ old and has a rich legend linked to the Pandavas of the Mahabharata epic.
