The Assam Government has decided to start an annual award in the name of Guru Tegh Bahadur. The award will be given for exemplary work in the social service sector.
This was decided in a meeting between Assam Chief Minister Sarbnanda Sonowal and visiting Sikh delegation-led by Manjinder Singh Sirsa, general secretary, Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC). The delegation had urged the Chief Minister to institute the award.
Disclosing this in a statement, Sirsa said the DSGMC welcomed the decision which would go a long way in resurrecting the Sikhs in the state.
A Sikh delegation led by Sirsa is on a visit to Assam. Kuldeep Singh Bhogal, a senior Akali leader and Indu Singh, a social worker, are also part of it.
Sirsa said the DSGMC had already decided to take up sewa of renovation of Gurdwara Mata ji in Assam. Its plan was being prepared and the work would begin by mid-November.
The DSGMC would also take help of technical experts for the preservation of handwritten Guru Granth Sahib and other historical articles in possession of the gurdwara.
