After losing their son to some illness about two years ago, this aged couple decided to become parents again, and they did it.

Gurwinder Kaur and her husband Balbir Singh (both 62) of Nangal Kalan village in Mansa district are the proud parents of twins — a boy and a girl. The woman, past her menopause, has given birth to the twins through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) procedure at a private hospital here.

Balbir Singh said: “We have three daughters, two of them married. But after the death of our son, we felt the need for a son who can look after us as well as our land of nearly 10 acres. In fact, our daughters requested us to opt for the IVF procedure. We have a grandson too, but our daughter-in-law took him away to her maternal house.”

Meanwhile, Gurwinder Kaur, who could not control her emotions, said it was a dream come true for her as she got two more children at this stage. “We had earlier tried the IVF procedure, but it could not succeed,” she said.

Dr Gagandeep Garg of Ludhiana Children Hospital and Nursing Home said the babies and their mother were perfectly fine. “We used her husband’s sperm for the procedure. The babies took birth on November 20 and were kept under observation for a few days. The children and their mother have been discharged,” he said, adding that it was a rare case that an aged woman had delivered twins through IVF.
