A marriage party from Sahnewal in Ludhiana district had to return without the bride as she got married to another man.

The groom’s party spent three hours at the local police station in a bid to get the matter resolved, but to no avail.

“My friend, Nihal Kumar, had got engaged to this woman from Sangrur on April 30. The marriage was fixed for today. But when we reached Sangrur, the relatives of the bride did not allow us to enter the marriage palace. We sat in the city police station, but the cops did not take action,” said Amandeep Singh, a member of the groom’s party.

The band members stood at the main gate of the city police station, inviting the attention of the passersby. Many thought that the band had been booked by the police to welcome officers.

The police had assured the groom’s party of looking into the matter, but later expressed helplessness. They said that they could not compel the bride to get married to Nihal.

“The groom’s family has given us in writing that they were willing to marry the groom to the bride and had come to Sangrur with that aim. But the bride’s family said no to the wedding without giving any reason. The groom’s side has not lodged any complaint and has returned home,” said SHO Vijay Kumar. When contacted, the bride’s family refused to comment.
