BJP leader held for maligning Tewari’s father

The district police have arrested a BJP leader from Nangal for allegedly circulating a video clip claiming that the father of Congress candidate from Anandpur Sahib Tewari was involved in anti-Sikh riots of 1984. According to the police a total of eight suspects have been identified in the case till now.
Accused Naresh Chawala is district vice-president of the party. Tewari’s father, an academician at Panjab University, Prof VN Tewari, was assassinated by militants six months before the riots on April 3, 1984, in Chandigarh.
Tewari had lodged a complaint with the Election Commission and Punjab Police, seeking action against miscreants for spreading false and malicious propaganda against him and his family on social media yesterday only.
Ropar SSP Swapan Sharma said the police had got directions from the EC, following which one person was nabbed. “All suspects will be arrested soon.” —TNS
