Barnala, December 1
Farmers lifted their dharna this evening after the Mehal Kalan police registered a case against district Congress senior vice-president and Kalala village sarpanch Ranjit Singh for allegedly abetting the suicide of BKU (Rajewal) district president Amar Singh. Initially, the cops had claimed that he died of a heart attack.
“Amar Singh died due to stress caused by Ranjit Singh,” said Pritam Singh, district general secretary of BKU (Rajewal) while sitting on dharna at Aggarsain Chowk.
Cheeniwal Kalan resident Amar Singh was found dead at his house under mysterious circumstances on Wednesday night. His family and BKU members alleged that Ranjit had procured Amar’s signatures on a blank affidavit and later filled Rs 15 lakh as debt.
Denying the allegations, Ranjit said: “I have filed a recovery suit of Rs 15 lakh against Amar Singh. I have evidence to prove that I gave him this sum on December 9, 2014. The case is pending in court.”
After the registration of a case, a post-mortem examination was conducted at the Civil Hospital. The cremation will be held tomorrow.
Mehal Kalan SHO Naib Singh said they were conducting raids to arrest Ranjit. “We have registered a case under Section 306 of the IPC on the statement of Gurmale Singh, son of the deceased,” he added.
