The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has denied clearance to Punjabi film ‘Toofan Singh’, based on the life of Khalistani militant Jugraj Singh Toofan.

‘Toofan Singh’ co-producer Jarnail Singh, who had met CBFC chairman Pahlaj Nihalani, had sent the film to the review committee. However, eight of the 15 members of the committee rejected the film. The producers have decided to move the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s Tribunal.

Born in 1971 at Cheema Khudi village in Jalandhar district, Jugraj was killed in a police encounter in 1990. According to the filmmakers, he was a self-styled Robin Hood. Punjabi singer-actor Ranjit Bawa, who plays the lead role, said: “We waited in vain for almost two years for the release. Now, I request my fans abroad to watch and support the film.” — TNS
