The Dal Khalsa, while remembering its founder Gajinder Singh in his absence on his 66th birthday, stated that it wanted the United Nations to give refugee status to him. They reasoned that in international parlance, he was a stateless person.
Gajinder and his colleagues had hijacked an Indian plane on September 29, 1981, and is currently living in self-imposed exile at an undisclosed location. It was believed that Gajinder had settled in Pakistan after his release in November 1994.
“It is ironic that he has to spend his life in oblivion despite the fact that he has undergone life imprisonment for hijacking,” said party’s senior leaders HS Dhami and Kanwar Pal Singh.
They said they had decided to approach the UNHCR (The UN Refugee agency) to get the status for him.
