The SGPC on Monday opened a co-educational “dhadi” and “kavishri” college at Guru ki Wadali here. Christened as Giani Sohan Singh Sital Dhadi/Kavishri Gurmat Missionary College, the institute has been dedicated to renowned “dhadi” and Sikh scholar Giani Sohan Singh.
SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal inaugurated the college. A total of 40 seats are offered. Though there is no girl student as yet, Longowal invited them to join the college on the spot, a demand put forth by SGPC member Bibi Kiranjot Kaur. He also announced a separate hostel for them.
The three-year course will be taught free of cost and the students would rather get scholarship of Rs 1,200 per month.
The SGPC is facing shortage of “dhadi jathas” and “kavishris”. It is being viewed that those completing the course might be employed by the SGPC in its gurdwaras.
Longowal said: “There are talented ‘dhadis’ and ‘kavishars’, but the young generation is not getting into this field despite having ample knowledge about the Sikh history and rehat maryada. Our aim is to hone their talent and offer them better prospects. This is also an initiative to motivate the youth to adopt Sikh values and safeguard them from drugs.”
Also present on the occasion were SGPC chief secretary Roop Singh, general secretary Gurbachan Singh Karmuwala and Kiranjot Kaur.
