Chandigarh: The state government has adopted a policy to demarcate areas within a radius of 100 yards around educational institutions under the “yellow line”, which will be declared tobacco-free zones. The Yellow Line Campaign was launched by Brahm Mohindra, Health and Family Welfare Minister, on Thursday during the Punjab State No Tobacco Day event organised at the Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh.  The function was organised by the State Tobacco Control Cell in collaboration with Schools of Public Health, PGlMER, Chandigarh. Job fairs at 40 places from Nov 12

Chandigarh: The state government will organise the third round of job fairs under the Ghar Ghar Rozgar Yojana from November 12 to 22 at 40 places across the state. Punjab Technical Education and Employment Generation Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, while reviewing the arrangements for the third round of job fairs, said the state government would offer 82,000 job opportunities in the private sector to the youth of Punjab during these fairs. Road blockade by 7 farmer bodies on Nov 5

Chandigarh: Seven farmer organisations have announced to block road traffic in the state on November 5 in protest against the alleged fleecing and harassment of farmers in mandis during ongoing paddy procurement. In a joint press release, BKU (Ugrahan) general secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokri and BKU (Dakaunda) president Buta Singh Burjgill said traffic would be blocked for three hours. The organisations said interference of rice mill owners in the procurement process should be stopped immediately.  TNS

Man, son booked for immigration fraud

Barnala: Two persons have been booked for duping a man of Rs 43 lakh on the pretext of sending his daughter and son to Canada. “On the complaint of Sadhu Singh, we have registered a fraud case against Harjeet Singh and his son Jagdev Singh. Both allegedly took Rs 43 lakh from Sadhu on the pretext of sending his daughter and son to Canada. However, they neither sent them abroad nor returned the money. Raids are on to nab them,” said ASI Jagtar Singh. TNS

Man arrested with illegal revolver

Abohar: Varun Sharma of Ferozepur Cantonment was among three persons nabbed in Sriganganagar under the Arms Act on Thursday. Dozens of policemen and Quick Response Team commandoes on Thursday cordoned off Sikligir Basti, infamous for sale of drugs, arms and ammunition, in the Shyam Nagar area. Varun was nabbed with a Sixer revolver. Kuldeep Bhat was nabbed with .12-bore illicit pistol, Kundan Lal with two live cartridges. OC

Six arrested for gambling

Dera Bassi: The city police arrested six persons while indulging in gambling. The police also claimed to have recovered Rs 21,000 from them. They have been identified as Avtar Singh of Bhankarpur; Raj Kumar of Dera Bassi; Kuldeep of Mubarikpur; Ram Avtar of Lalru; Sumer Chand of Yamunanagar district and Sunil. OC
