Fatehgarh Sahib, March 26
With the arrest of five persons, the district police have unearthed a sham marriage gang. The members of the gang used to arrange fake marriages by bringing poor girls from other states and later used to blackmail and fleece youths.
The kingpin of the gang, Subedar Sohan Singh, has been arrested, whereas bride Kuldeep Kaur is at large. The police have recovered Rs 15,000 from them.
Amneet Kondal, SSP, while addressing mediapersons said here today that Harpreet Singh of Jhampur village complained to the police that some people were blackmailing him threatening registration of fake rape or dowry case as his wife had fled and was demanding Rs 1 lakh.
The SSP said five persons, identified as Sukhwinder Singh of Moga, Sohan Singh Subedar of Ludhiana, Bhupinder Singh of Ludhiana, Sarbjit Kaur of Fatehgarh Sahib and Kiranjot Kaur, wife of Bhupinder Singh, had been arrested. — OC
