Abohar, June 28
The police thwarted an attempt by members of the Food Corporation of India Workers Union to disrupt the loading of wheat in a special goods train in Abohar today.
As the loading was planned at 6 am, hundreds of union activists learnt about it and assembled in the union office to protest. Police and civil officials reached there with heavy force, put up barricades to block the road. About 200 labourers, who had been engaged by a private contractor, started lifting wheat bags from godowns and used goods carriers to load about 50,000 bags in the special train at the main rail yard.
Meanwhile, FCI workers sat on dharna near the barricade and raised slogans. Union’s national committee member Shriram Nooniwal criticised the Centre for rapidly implementing privatisation. “Those workers who have been working for long under the FCI directly will face a hard time if their jobs get outsourced,” he said. — OC
