Mindi was killed by two youths yesterday when he was working in the fields at Ludhiana’s Rasulra village. A former sarpanch, he was heading the “Gandhi Group” of suspected gangsters.

NS Mahal, SSP, told the media the recovery of a motorcycle of the attackers near the murder scene led the police to ascertain the identity of the accused.

On the reason behind the murder, the SSP said Garcha nursed a grudge against Mindi for slapping him during a wedding about two years ago.

“A scuffle had broken out between the Garcha-Ravi Khawajke group and ‘Gandhi Group’ at a marriage palace near Khanna. Mindi reportedly slapped Garcha, while some shots were fired. One of the shots hit Garcha in his foot,” Mahal said.

The SSP said, “Garcha is a hardened criminal. He has been booked in three cases, including attempt to murder.”

‘Gandhi group’ targeting students

NS Mahal, SSP, said the “Gandhi group”, which Manwinder Singh Mindi was heading, had formed its wings in several colleges and schools in Khanna, Ludhiana, Mandi Gobindgarh and other areas. “The police will disband the wings to save the youth treading the wrong path,” he said.
