The Congress government will raise a memorial to late Akali leader Panth Rattan Tara Singh. This was announced by Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu during a state-level function held to commemorate the former Akali leader’s 132nd birth anniversary here.
Sidhu said the Akali Dal as a pious organisation and asked its leaders to follow the path of their party founders. He said: “The Akali Dal is a pious organisation. Somehow, it has come under the control of one family”. He said the contemporary Punjab was facing a character crisis and there was a strong need to recall the contributions of leaders like Master Tara Singh who could serve as role model for the community.
He said Master Tara Singh used to donate Rs 135 from his monthly salary of Rs 150 to the school, where he was a headmaster. Comparing this with today’s leaders, he said they were involved in drug peddling and mafia to amass wealth.
Dr Jasbir Kaur, who has done doctorate on Master Tara Singh and is also a family member, credited him with carving out two Punjabs, one in India and another in Pakistan.
