An exhibition of the padukas or kharauns (sandals) worn by Guru Nanak will take place at Mumbai’s Khalsa College on Monday, as part of the 550th Parkash Purb celebrations of the Guru.
An official of the college said the kharauns had been brought to India from Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak. The relics are being carried aboard a bus, decked up as a ‘palki’, which is part of the nagar kirtan ‘Kal taaran Guru Nanak aaya’ which started from Nankana Sahib in August. The Guru’s relics are being taken across the country on board the bus.
The procession of the kharauns is being organised by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC). According to the college chairman, Gurinder Singh Bawa, the Sikh community in Mumbai had arranged for a helicopter to shower the palki carrying the relics with flowers.
According to the SGPC, the relics will be displayed at all five Takhts and the 65 holy destinations of the Sikhs across 17 states in the country.
