Punjab Governor VP Singh Badnore today launched a Chandigarh Police’s campaign to pay tributes to six UT police martyrs targeted during militancy by honouring Gayatri Devi, the widow of Jagjit Singh Jhajharia of Maujgarh village in Abohar sub-division.
On July 17, 1988, Jhajharia died in an encounter with terrorists following a raid at a house in Chandigarh’s Sector 45. Three terrorists were also killed in the encounter. He was posted as the SHO of Sector 39 police station at that time. He was awarded President’s Police Medal for Gallantry posthumously on May 10, 1989.
At a function at Jhajharia’s alma mater Government High School, the Governor honoured Gayatri. He also inaugurated a library built in the memory of Jhajharia.
In Kotkapura, Badnore honoured the family of Lalu Ram, a Punjab Police ASI who was killed in a bomb blast in August 1991 at Chandigarh.
At a function in Gandhi Memorial High School where Ram was a student in 1960s, the Governor paid tributes to him. Ram’s widow Raj Kumar, son, sister and brothers were present.
Bandore opened Martyr Lalu Ram Memorial Hall in the school and released a souvenir to commemorate the event.
