Muktsar, April 16
Former MP Jagmeet Singh Brar, who earlier served as Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and later joined the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) as the ad-hoc president of the party’s state unit in November 2016, is now all set to join the SAD on April 19.
Sources in the SAD confirmed that Jagmeet would be joining the party on April 19 in Muktsar. “Some more people are also likely to join the party on the same day. A local leader, who is a relative of Jagmeet and considered close to Sukhbir, has persuaded the former MP to join the Akali Dal,” sources claimed.
Jagmeet was expelled from the Congress on April 11, 2016, for his alleged anti-party remarks. After the Congress’ debacle in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he had suggested that the then AICC president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi should go on a sabbatical to introspect the reasons for the party’s worst performance in decades.
In January last year, he resigned from the TMC as well. Since then he had not joined any party.
Brar, a former Lok Sabha MP from Faridkot and a native of Charewan village in Muktsar, had defeated SAD chief Sukhbir Badal in 1999. Thereafter, Sukhbir had won the same constituency defeating Brar in 2004.
