Acting on the recommendations of the Justice Mehtab Singh Gill Commission of Inquiry into false cases registered during the SAD-BJP tenure from 2007- 2017, the state police have filed cancellation reports of 200 FIRs in different courts. The police have also initiated proceedings in 33 cases against the complainants for lodging “false” reports with the police.

The commission submitted its 16th interim report to the Chief Minister’s Office and the state Home Department today mentioning the cases taken up and dismissed so far, besides the action taken on the previous reports. The commission said action against a number of erring police officers had been initiated in 10 cases, while monetary compensation had been processed in 29 cases.

The latest recommendation, mentioned along with the 16th interim report, is against DSP Balwinder Singh, SHO Avtar Singh (Baghapurana) and Gurmit Kaur (complainant) in a case registered against one Resham Singh of Baghapurana under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Act on December 22, 2014, at the Baghapurana police station. The commission has recommended registration of an FIR against the accused cops for lodging a false case against Resham Singh.

Resham Singh had approached the Commission of Inquiry in June 2017 saying he was falsely implicated in the case at the behest of an Akali leader and SGPC member. He was acquitted by a court too. Justice Mehtab Singh said after hearing all parties, including the accused police officers, it was found that the investigation was not fair.
