A senior judge of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Krishna Murari, is all set to take over as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. His name has been cleared for elevation as the Chief Justice and a formal notification is expected to be issued soon.

Known for his integrity, hard work, dedication and liberal attitude, Justice Murari’s understanding and deep appreciation of the judicial system has been honed over a long career as a practising lawyer and as a High Court judge.

Justice Murari belongs to a family of lawyers. His uncle GN Verma was a senior advocate and a leading lawyer on the civil constitutional and revenue side. He had also been general secretary and president of the high court bar association.

Before being called to the Bench, Justice Murari was known for his practice on the civil side and was considered proficient in company matters and consolidation cases.

Born on July 9, 1958, Justice Murari was elevated as an Additional Judge on January 7, 2004 and took oath as a Permanent Judge on August 18, 2005. His elevation comes at a time when the Punjab and Haryana High Court is facing acute shortage of judges. As of now, the High Court has 50 judges, including the Chief Justice, against the sanctioned strength of 85. The pendency of case, too, is at an all-time high, with more than 3, 36 lakh cases awaiting adjudication.
