A religious programme was organised to mark the birth anniversary of Maharaja Ranjit Singh at Gurdwara Saragarhi, near the Golden Temple, here today.
Jaswinder Singh Sukarchakiya, a retired employee of the SGPC, claimed that as per the revenue records of the local district administration, his family tree traced back to Rattan Singh, a personal assistant to Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Maharaja Kharak Singh.
Accompanied by his nephew Sandeep Singh Sukarchakiya and other family members, he took part in Sukhmani Sahib recitation and offered ardas at the statue of the Maharaja, situated outside the gurdwara. He said the family hailed from Jagatpura Sikhan village near Kathunangal where two forts were situated. Sandeep Singh demanded that the government must expedite the renovation of Summer palace of the Maharaja, situated inside the Ram Bagh.
