Faridkot/Chandigarh, May 23
Giving its nod to the shifting of 500 MBBS students of Gian Sagar Medical College to eight colleges in the state, the executive committee of the Medical Council of India (MCI) today forwarded its recommendation to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The ministry will take the final call on the matter. Last week, the Punjab Government had sought the MCI’s consent to shift the students after the state Department of Medical Education and Research (DMER) had withdrawn the essentiality certificate and the no-objection certificate (NOC) to Gian Sagar medical, dental and nursing colleges on May 10.
Chintpurni Medical College, Pathankot, which is facing disaffiliation and withdrawal of essentiality certificate and NOC for not adhering to the MCI guidelines, is not among the colleges to which the Gian Sagar students will be moved, said sources in the DMER.
State writes to Centre
The state government has shot off a communication to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the MCI, the Dental Council of India and the Indian Nursing Council for shifting students of Gian Sagar institutes.
This information was furnished before the Punjab and Haryana High Court by Advocate General Atul Nanda during the resumed hearing of a case filed by the students. The letter stated that a roadmap for shifting the students had been prepared.
