Chandigarh, July 1
The Punjab Civil Medical Services Association, a body of government doctors, on Sunday alleged that doctors doing postgraduation in in-service quota at Government Medical College, Amritsar, were being exploited by the teachers.
Association president Dr Gagandeep Singh said some government doctors, who have completed postgraduation from Amritsar Medical College in recent years, have alleged that teachers seek money, gold coins and expensive liquor from students.
The association president alleged that recently government doctors who were doing MD in medicine were asked to install new air conditioners in the medicine wards of the hospital. He alleged that those who were reluctant were threatened with consequences.
Demanding a high-level inquiry, Dr Singh said, “The exploitation of the students starts with the first year and it continues over the next three years.”
He said in three years students were asked to provide expensive gifts on festivals, during examinations, thesis submission etc. He added that the association would take up the matter with Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, as well as Health Minister Brahm Mohindra.
College Principal Dr Sujata Sharma was not available for comment. However, Dr Shivcharan Singh, head, medicine, denied the allegations.
However, Additional Chief Secretary Satish Chandra said any such practice was unacceptable. “I will look into the matter,” he added.
