Nanhi Chhaan’s Golden Temple ‘galliara’ upkeep contract ends

After a decade-long voluntary service to maintain the green cover in the ‘galliara’ surrounding the Golden Temple, the Nanhi Chhaan Foundation has called it quits.

Now, the search is on to look for another NGO that could undertake this task.

The SGPC has come forward to carry on its maintenance. SGPC’s chief secretary Dr Roop Singh said, “We are ready to look after the ‘galliara’ if the government permits,” he said.

In 2007, Nanhi Chhaan Foundation had taken up the upkeep of the ‘galliara’, the 3-km space around the shrine that was conceptualised after Operation Bluestar.

In the densely populated area of the walled city, the ‘galliara’ offered a whiff of fresh air, besides enhancing the aura of the shrine.

But today, it presents a picture of neglect. There is an unkempt green belt with overgrown grass and weeds. The fountains are defunct and piles of half-burnt garbage can be seen.

According to residents, there are vulnerable spots in the ‘galliara’ which could be occupied by unsocial elements when it gets dark.

Though the exact reasons for foundation’s stepping down are not known, sources said that its five-year contract, which was extended for another five years, had elapsed.

Foundation chairman Harpal Singh said, “We put in our best efforts to rejuvenate the ‘galliara’ with lawns, trees and fountains. Hopefully, the Almighty will recognise our services. After 11 years, we wish to give the opportunity to do this ‘sewa’ to others. We, through our many other initiatives, will continue to promote social and environmental causes.”

Punjab Urban Development Authority (PUDA) is the government agency responsible for the project.

Chief Administrator Dipti Uppal said that Nanhi Chhan Foundation’s contract ended recently. “NGO Surya Helpage has offered its services, but that is yet to be finalised,” she said.

Deputy Commissioner KS Sangha, who happens to be project director of the ‘galliara’ project said, “We have no problem if the SGPC offers to maintain the ‘galliara’ as per the norms laid down by the government. The SGPC can approach us.”
