Ropar, November 7
The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved the proposal to construct a national highway between Morinda and Paniali Khurd village via Chamkaur Sahib providing direct connectivity to thousands of residents of Morinda and Chamkaur Sahib with the Ropar-Nawanshahr road.
With this the two religious places of Fatehgarh Sahib and Chamkaur Sahib will also be connected with the national highway as the Centre has already declared Fatehgarh Sahib-Morinda road as a national highway.
Governor VP Singh Badnore and CMCapt Amarinder Singh had written letters to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in this regard.
Cabinet Minister and Chamkaur Sahib MLA Charanjit Singh Channi said the national highway would be constructed at a cost of Rs 500 crore. He said the new highway, starting from Morinda, would pass through Chamkaur Sahib and Bela before touching Paniali Khurd village on the Nawanshahr road, nearly 10 km from Ropar. Till now the people from Morinda, Chamkaur Sahib and hundreds of villages in the area had to go via Ropar to go towards Nawanshahr in the absence of any bridge on the Sutlej.
He said with this now the traffic congestion in Chandigarh, Mohali and Kharar would also be reduced as vehicles from the Ambala side going towards J&K and a few parts of Himachal Pradesh would not have to enter Chandigarh or Mohali. — TNS
