Moga, March 8
The state government has issued a fresh notification to ban the distribution and sale of 20 insecticides that are considered harmful for human beings and also cause damage to the environment.
A similar ban was imposed for a month in February this year. The latest ban will also be applicable till March 30 because the Centre is likely to bring the Pesticide (insecticide) Management Bill in the ongoing Parliament session. A draft of the Bill has already been prepared by the Union government.
Presently, state governments do not have the final power to permanently disallow the use of toxic pesticides.
According to the notification, the 20 insecticides whose sale has been discontinued are: Phosphamidon, Tricholorofon, Benfuracarb, Dicofol, Methomyl, Thiophanate Methyl, Endosulfan, Bifenthrin, Carbosulfan, Chlorfenapyr, Dazomet, Diflubenzuron, Fenitrothion, Metaldehyde, Kasugamycin, Ethofenprox (Etofenprox), Phorate, Triazophos, Alachior and Monocrotophos.
