Ending the controversy over 10 sports quota MBBS and 12 BDS seats in the state, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) on Friday announced to give more weightage to the NEET score of the sportspersons than their medals in the admission process. The university has asked the sports quota aspirant candidates to reach Faridkot on September 7 for counselling and admission.

September 7 is the Supreme Court-fixed deadline to complete medical and dental admissions in the state. Regarding the controversy over the NEET-2019 score or medal-based ranking for admission purpose, the university has clarified that as per the High Court’s August 8 orders, while determining inter se merit of candidates possessing same sports gradation, only the NEET score shall be considered for rank fixation.

“We will make admission as per the HC orders and 23 sports quota candidates who have equal grade will now be ranked on the basis of NEET-2019 score,” said Dr Raj Bahadur, Vice Chancellor, BFUHS, the central nodal agency the MBBS and BDS admissions in the state.

On September 3, the BFUHS had suspended the counselling on sports quota seats in view of a controversy over the fixation of merit and rank of 32 aspirant candidates for the quota seats in the state.

On August 30, the Sports Department had revised its July 8 merit list of all 32 eligible aspirants who were shortlisted by the department.

In the July 8 merit list, the sports department had relied upon the number of medals won by a student for the fixation of merit of the candidates with equal grade in sports category. However, in the August 30 revised merit list, the sports department had computed the merit and rank of the candidates with equal grade on the basis of their score in NEET-2019.

Again on September 1, the Sports Department had demanded the BFUHS to consider its July 8 merit and rank list. We will consider the August 30 list in which the merit of the candidates with equal sports gradation was ranked on the basis of their score in NEET-2019, said the VC.
