Moga, December 20
After the issuance of notice of rejection of nomination papers of 39 candidates in the ensuing panchayat elections in the Kot-ise-Khan block of the district, SAD candidates staged a protest against Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and Congress MLA Kaka Sukhjit Singh Lohgarh outside the BDPO office.
The protest was led by Akali leader Parminder Singh, an aspirant for the post of sarpanch from Manawan village. His name also figured in the list of notices issued by the administration.
The protesters alleged that the local Congress leadership was bent upon rejecting the nomination papers of the opposition parties and the official machinery was hand-in-glove with them.
Senior SAD leader Tota Singh has alleged that the district administration was playing in the hands of Congress leaders in rejecting the nomination paper of Akali candidates.
He announced that the SAD would stage a protest against the Congress at Kot-ise-Khan town on Friday. “We urge the State Election Commission to intervene into the matter because SDMs have been rejecting the nomination papers of opposition candidates in the district under political pressure of the Congress,” he said. “We will do whatever needs to be done to protect the democratic rights of our candidates,” he added.
He warned the police not to indulge in “issuing threats” to the candidates of the opposition parties, or else the SAD would file legal cases against them.
Rozy leads protest
Muktsar: SAD activists under the leadership of local MLA Kanwarjit Singh Rozy Barkandi on Thursday lodged a protest outside the municipal council office, alleging that the election officials were set to reject the nominations of some of their candidates. Rozy said the lists of candidates after scrutiny, which had to be displayed by 3 pm, were not even displayed till late evening, which indicated an attempt of malpractice. The lists were later displayed and the Akalis dispersed. TNS
