An 80-year-old woman, whose two sons are officers in the Punjab Police, was found murdered at her house in the Dakoha locality here on Monday.
Shiela Rani, mother of AIG Sareen Prabhakar, who is posted as commandant at the Punjab Armed Police (PAP), used to live alone at her house.
She was found dead by her daughter, who came to visit her at 1 pm on Monday.
Initial investigations suggest that the woman was strangled to death before looting her jewellery.
Station House Officer (SHO) Kuldip Singh Kang said, “Robbers took away only her gold bangles, one ring and earrings. Rest everything was untouched.”
Shiela Rani’s eldest son Sareen said when his sister Deepika Kalia went to their mother’s house on Monday, no one opened the door despite repeated knocking. She went inside the house after jumping from the neighbour’s house.
He added that his mother was living alone as she wanted to live in their ancestral house. Normally, she used to go to his brother Naveen Prabhakar’s place in the night as his house was only a few metres away from the mother’s house. Naveen is serving as inspector in Hoshiarpur. However, she was not going to his place for the past four days.
Further investigations revealed that no maid was employed as she managed everything on her own.
The AIG said he and his wife used to visit her once in a week to clean the house. No family rivalry was reported while investigating the murder, the SHO added.
The actual reason behind the murder would only be revealed after the postmortem report, the AIG added.
