Parts of Punjab ban Hindi serial ‘Ram Siya ka Luv Kush’

District administrations of Patiala, Kapurthala, Nawashahr, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, and Jalandhar have banned telecast of Hindi television serial ‘Ram Siya ka Luv Kush’ for a month citing objections raised by Valmiki community, and law and order considerations.

In orders that appeared similarly worded, orders from Patiala, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, and Ferozepur administration said that airing the serial could lead to tensions in the area.

An order by Jalandhar’s district magistrate read: “There is large population of SC/Valmiki community in this District and resentment is prevailing among them over the issue of screening of this serial. The leaders of the community are alleging that the serial is showings T wrong facts about Bhagwan Valmik Ji and it is hurting their religious sentiments. They have also submitted a memorandum demanding action against the TV channel and the persons responsible for distorting the history of Valmiki Ramayan”.

“As per written reports received from the office of Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar and Senior Superintendent of Police, Jalandhar (Rural), Vide their office letter No. 71681 dated 06/09/19 and No. 58272 dated 06/09/19 respectively, it is apprehended that if the screening this serial is allowed to be continued in the district, there is very strong apprehension of communal/Caste based tensions among different sections of the society leading to disruption of peace, public tranquility and communal harmony. This may lead to large scale violence and damage to public private property all over the district,” the order read.

A similar order came from district magistrates of Ferozepur and Hoshiarpur.

“It is apprehended that it the screening of this serial is allowed to be continued in the district there is very strong apprehension of communal/caste based tensions among different sections of the society leading to disruption of peace public tranquility and communal harmony. This may lead to large sale violence and damage to public and private property all over the district,” an order signed from Hoshiarpur’s district magistrate said.   

All district magistrates cited Section 19 of the Cable TV Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, read with Section 2.
