Sangrur: A team of the Sangrur VB on Tuesday caught the Dirba patwari red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from his area resident Manohar Singh. DSP VB Hans Raj said Manohar had lost a case of land to his relative Bhani Devi, who claimed to be the owner of land. Manohar had filed an appeal in the upper court some days ago. He had met patwari Hardeep Singh fearing that he might quash the registration of land under his name. The patwari demanded Rs 7 lakh for not cancelling the registration. TNS
1 booked for rape
Moga: A 23-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a youth of her neighbourhood in the city. Preliminary investigation revealed that the two knew each other for the past few years. The accused, Munish Dhand, was allegedly blackmailing her. She told her parents about him, who informed the police. A case has been registered against him. TNS
Three of family drown in reservoir
Abohar: A farm worker, his son and daughter-in-law got drowned in a water reservoir at Chak 11KLD village in Sriganganagar on Monday evening. Villagers said Jai Chand Meghwal (50) slipped into the reservoir while taking water. His son Roopa Ram (24) jumped to rescue him, but when he too started drowning his wife Bimla (21) threw her dupatta into the reservoir to save her husband. However, she too fell in. OC
Two held for property fraud
Abohar: The city police on Tuesday arrested Sanjay Nagpal and Happy, both residents of Nai Abadi, in a fraud case. Karina of Azeemgarh has also been booked. Nai Abadi resident Bhim Sain had, in a complaint on June 8, alleged that some persons had got property rights of his five shops transferred in their name with the connivance of Revenue Department staff. MGNREGA workers hold protest
Sangrur: Dalit labourers under the banner of the Krantikari Pendu Mazdoor Union held a protest in front of the BDPO office, Dhuri, here on Tuesday. They alleged that the authorities were not making mandatory entries of MGNREGA workers in their jobs, delaying the payment. “We lifted our dharna after assurances, but we will intensify our agitation if the authorities fail to release the pending payment of MGNREGA workers and complete entries in their job cards,” said Baljit Singh, a union leader. Class IV employees burn govt’s effigy
Sangrur: Members of the Class IV Government Employees Union on Tuesday burnt an effigy of the state government in front of the DC office. “We will intensify our agitation if the government fails to fulfil our long pending demands, including regularising jobs of contractual employees and release of pending financial benefits to all employees,” said Ranjit Singh, state general secretary of the union. Rape accused arrested
Abohar: The police have arrested Lakhwinder Singh of Faridkot for kidnapping and rape of a girl from Sharnarthi Basti here on January 23. The girl was was found unconscious in a street the next day. She was able to give her statement only after about a week of treatment. She alleged that Gaggu raped her and then forced her to consume insecticide under threat. She was later thrown in her native colony. OC
