Teachers have demanded to be paid on the CBSE pattern for the Punjab School Education Board’s Class 10th and 12th examination duties.

The PSEB has adopted the CBSE model to conduct this year’s annual examinations but teachers say they will not be paid accordingly. This has caused resentment among the fraternity with many teachers’ unions planning protests, including a dharna in front of Education Minister Aruna Chaudhury’s residence in Dinanagar, before the examinations commence from February 28.

The education board has decided to depute superintendents and deputy superintendents from other schools but invigilators, clerks and peons will be from the same school where examinations are scheduled to be held. Unionists claim that despite the fact that the staff will be working for extra hours during examinations, they will not be paid anything.

“On the contrary, the CBSE pays an invigilator Rs 350, a clerk Rs 150 and a peon Rs 100 per day. Here in Punjab we are not being paid anything despite the school board collecting hefty examination fee of Rs 1,050 and Rs 1,350 per student for Class X and XII, respectively. The Education Minister is quick to follow the CBSE pattern but when it comes to paying money the same model in not followed. This is becoming a major cause of resentment. We urge the minister to look into this anomaly,” said Davinder Singh Punia, general secretary, Punjab Teachers Democratic Front.

Leaders claim that the remuneration for checking papers should also be on the CBSE lines. “The CBSE pays a teacher Rs 25 per paper. The PSEB pays just Rs 5. This leaves absolutely no motivation among teachers to check papers,” added Punia. “The board cold-shoulders us when it comes to providing us facilities. But when students fare poorly, we are the ones to be pulled up,” said Bhupinder Singh Waraich, a unionist.
