The Punjab Police have decided to forfeit the security and cancel further orders of a telecommunications company that failed to supply a requisite number of wireless sets to the department within a stipulated time.
At the same time, the state Prisons Department has asked the police to verify allegations levelled by an ex-ASI of the Punjab Police Information Technology and Telecommunications Department that the company had supplied inferior equipment to the police and the jail department.
The company had taken orders to supply 1,500 wireless sets out of which 500 were meant for the jail department. Inderpreet Singh Sahota, ADGP (Jails), in a letter to VK Bhawra, DGP, Information Technology and Telecommunications Department, said the police had got the equipment, adding that 200 sets were yet to be procured.
He said the equipment seems to be working fine, but if something comes up, an inquiry would be conducted and necessary action would be taken.
His department had already penalised the company by ordering forfeiting of the security of Rs 3 lakh, sources said.
The ex-ASI had earlier also exposed some scams in the Information Technology and Telecommunications Department. He requested anonymity claiming that he had received threats. He alleged that the batteries of the new wireless sets were working to 50 per cent of their capacity. He also alleged that the department had purchased the equipment at twice the cost.
However, an official of the company claimed that the decision to forfeit the security and cancel further orders had been taken due to non-supply of the remaining wireless sets.
