The Zail police post of Ajit Nagar has been supplying power to the tubewell that supplies water to area residents after the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) removed an illegal connection on February 20 from the tubewell.
The police have announced that they will provide electricity to the tubewell free of cost till residents get a legal connection.
A PSPCL team had conducted a raid on February 20 and disconnected power supply to the tubewell after they found that it was allegedly being run with a “kundi” connection.
The disconnection of power supply led to water shortage in surrounding houses of Sundar Basti, following which the residents approached police officers as the post is located opposite to their tubewell.
Police post officers were initially reluctant, but when the issue reached Sangrur SSP Mandeep Sidhu, he immediately directed the post incharge to start electricity supply to the tubewell.
“We are running the tubewell from our post connection as area residents do not have any other source of water. I have asked the police officers to help residents in getting power connection too,” said Sidhu, who also met area residents recently and sought their help against drugs.
Area councillor Pinky Gharu said they were trying to get a power connection for the tubewell.
