Chandigarh, July 6
Punjab State Women Commission chairperson Manisha Gulati on Friday met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to raise the issue of alleged exploitation of females by NRIs.
In her meeting with Swaraj in the national capital, Gulati highlighted the plight of women suffering due to betrayals by NRI grooms and sought her help to curb the menace.
Gulati told the minister that despite present and previous governments passing many laws to protect such victims, the exploitation has not been curtailed.
Over 30,000 legal cases are pending in Punjab alone, in which NRI’s presumably abandoned their wives, she said.
These women need help immediately, she said, adding that that if the guilty NRI was in the ambit of conviction, his extradition process must be initiated immediately and his passport confiscated till the aggrieved wife is compensated. — PTI
