Bathinda, March 28

Punjabi actor Sohaj Aulakh Brar, daughter of noted playwright Ajmer Singh Aulakh and wife of Punjabi singer Gurvinder Brar, was cremated here on Wednesday. She had committed suicide by hanging herself at her Model Town residence on Tuesday. The post-mortem examination was conducted at the local civil hospital by a board of doctors.

The post-mortem was done after her mother Manjeet Kaur Aulakh gave her statement and the Cantonment police conducted the proceeding under Section 174 of CrPC. According to family members, she was under stress for the past some time after her father’s death, who passed away in June last year. Incidentally, her husband had gone to Mansa on Tuesday evening to attend a programme, “Yaadan Aulakh Dia”, organised by the Lok Kala Manch in the memory of the noted playwright, while she stayed at home.

She was a theatre artist and had also worked in Punjabi movies like “Ik Kudi Punjab Di”, “Putt Jattan De”, “Jatt Boys” and “Mohhabtaan”. She has a son, Najim Brar, and daughter Rujeenat Brar. Rujeenat appeared for her Class X exam on Wednesday, after which the cremation took place.

“She used to urge farmers not to commit suicide through her father’s plays, but she herself ended her life, which is shocking,” one of her relatives said.

Sohaj’s sisters Sumandeep and Ajmeet Kaur attended the funeral.
