Sangrur girl Eliza on Monday aced the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) MBBS entrance examination, even as students from Punjab and Haryana bagged the top four positions.

Bathinda’s Ramneek Kaur Mahal bagged the second rank, while Panchkula’s Mehak Arora claimed the third position. Manraj Singh Sra, also from Bathinda, secured the fourth spot, and another Panchkula girl, Eishvauk Aggarwal, the 10th.

Eliza, 17, who belongs to Lehragaga in Sangrur district, passed out from Dr Dev Raj DAV Senior Secondary Public School, Khai Lehragaga, and attended classes at a private coaching institute in Patiala.

“I have always dreamt of serving my area, which doesn’t have too many doctors. My family has supported me in a big way,” said an elated Eliza. Father Vijay Kumar, an economics lecturer, said they were proud of her achievement. “She devoted eight to 10 hours every day to studies. On weekends, she attended classes at a private institute to clear her doubts,” he said. Her elder brother Robin is pursuing BTech from IIT, New Delhi.

Ramneek, who had secured 10th rank in NEET, swore by regularity and staying away from the social media as her success mantra.

Mehak Arora, who lost her father due to medical negligence when she was in Class VII, credited him with her success. Sharing her success mantra, she said: “Listen to your teachers, have fun and don’t take stress.”

“Mehak will be the first doctor in a family of chartered accountants and advocates,” said her mother Renu Arora.

Manraj Singh Sra, currently staying with his grandparents in Mohali, said his doctor-parents Navpreet and Jaspreet Singh Sra were his inspiration. “I studied for eight to 10 hours and took breaks every three to four hours,” he added. — TNS
