Sports fraternity bids adieu to wrestler Sukhchain Cheema

Dronacharya awardee wrestler Sukhchain Singh Cheema, who died in an accident on Wednesday night, was cremated here this afternoon. Family members, friends, his trainees, coaches, players and a number of residents bid a tearful adieu to the renowned wrestler whose death has come as a shock to the sports fraternity across the state.

His sons Palwinder Singh Cheema and Tejpal Singh Cheema lit the pyre. The family members were inconsolable.

Expressing grief over the accident, PRTC Chairman KK Sharma said the accident brought to an end an era that had lifted wresting to new heights. PRTC Managing Director Manjit Singh Narang, Inspector General of Police AS Rai, DIG Sukhchain Singh Gill, Director, GST, Gurpal Singh Chahal and Sangrur SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu were present.

A large number of coaches, including Gurbax Singh Sandhu, TL Gupta and Prem Sharma (all boxing), Bahadur Singh and VK Verma (athletics), GB Bariki (weightlifting), OP Yadav (wrestling) and DK Rathore, incharge, academics, NIS, were also present.
