Storm causes damage at Amritsar airport

Glass gates and the false ceiling of the main building at the Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport were damaged during a thunderstorm on Thursday night.

Two CISF personnel sustained minor injuries when an aluminum entry gate fell on them. The storm hit the airport building in the wee hours when a flight was ready to depart. However, the passengers escaped unhurt.

The storm caused damage to the arrival area near the VIP lounge and immigration area. The glass windows at the restaurant and the front gate were also damaged.The airport authorities have started the repair work.

Meanwhile, the airport authorities claimed that the design was certified and the material was not sub-standard.

Airport Director Manoj Chansoria said, “It was a natural calamity. The speed of wind was more than 130 per km. The passengers and the airport staff are safe. Two CISF employees have been hospitalised. The building structure is certified and the material including steel and glasses are of international standards.”
